WWI Picture Books

Picture books are highly illustrated and often easier for younger readers to read. Grade suggestions are provided. All books provide insight into some aspect of the Great War.

A Bear in War

This is the story of a ten-year old Canadian girl who mailed her teddy bear to her father who was serving overseas during WW1. She hoped it would comfort him to have him with him.

A Brave Soldier

Depicts the real-life conditions of the Canadian soldiers during World War 1, neither glorifying them nor dwelling on their horror. A realistic portrayal for young people.

Bunny the Brave War Horse

Tells the story about one of the horses sent from Canada to the war in Europe. Bunny served admirably and was the sole surviving horse by the end of the war.

A little shivering dog befriended a soldier in Paris and they travelled together to the war front. Soon, his exploits on the battlefield became legendary.

War Game: the Legendary Story of the First World War Football Match

This book illustrates a story based on a true-life miraculous football game between the English and the German's in no-man's land. It was a Christmas Day truce.

Winnie: The True Story of the Bear Who Inspired Winnie-the-Pooh

The story of a Canadian soldier who bought a baby bear and named him Winnie (in honour of Winnipeg) and brought him with him to Britain during WWI. The bear became his unit's mascot before moving into the London zoo where he was seen by author A.A. Milne who wrote Winnie-the-Pooh.
