WWI Animal Mascots & Heroes

There are many interesting stories about animals who became helpers and mascots during World War One, including a famous one from Canada, Winnie, who became Winnie the Pooh in A.A. Milne's stories.

Here is a selection of some of the stories about them.

A Bear in War
Not a real bear, but a teddy bear was mailed by a ten year Canadian girl to her father overseas to comfort him as he fought for his country.

Winnie: The True Story of the Bear Who Inspired Winnie the Pooh
A Canadian soldier saw a baby bear for sale at the train station, bought him and named him Winnie (short for Winnipeg, his home town). After training, they go to England and the warfront where he will eventually meet A.A. Milne.

Also, the story of the bear named Winnie is told in the film A Bear Named Winnie. It is an amazing story of friendship and hope told in this Gemini-award winning film (also available on DVD @ Your Library).
